Ranking Candidates by Experience

This grew out of another thread on the NH primary polling results showing Clinton ahead and the issue of candidate experience.

Ranking the candidates by experience.

Clinton
8 years in the White House
8 years US Senator.

Obama
3 years community organizer
8 years Illinois legislator
4 years US Senate

Edwards
6 years US Senate

"Yeah, she took them [health cares special interests] on...and failed miserably."

So did MLK when he first started out taking on segreationists.  Battling entrenched special interests can take decades. Civil rights took over 100 years from end of Civil War to Civil Rights act and we are still not there yet.

She took them on is the key. She had to work out a real national plan. She had to try and build a coalition in Congress to pass it.

Hillary's White Experience, how it operates, what works, what causes problems, is a huge asset for her and for US if she is the next president. She is correct to use this as a reason to vote for her.

I'm voting for Obama in the primaries because I think he will be a more effective leader but I don't discount Hillary Clinton's experience and skills.

I'll still take Edwards (3.00 / 0)

I don't count whitehouse days for Clinton.

Time in office doesn't make one a good candidate if it did there are many with Years of experience and by your point we should have started a draft campaign on them in stead of the draft campaigns that went on.

How about Ted Kennedy for one?

Re: Ranking Candidates by Experience (3.00 / 1)

You left out Richardson, who has more experience than anyone who has run for President in twenty years.

Re: Ranking Candidates by Experience (3.00 / 1)

I agree; I assumed that this was a pro-Richardson thread from the title.

In any case, Clinton's husband also was a governor; is there any particular reason you aren't including that period of time?

Re: Ranking Candidates by Experience (none / 0)

I'm sure there are many people who have more experience than the leading candidates but I think we know that it will be Clinton, Edwards or Obama.

You might want to list Richardson's experience to see how it matches up.

Re: Ranking Candidates by Experience (none / 0)

Richardson served several terms in the House, spent time as Ambassador to the UN, served as Secretary of Energy, and was elected twice as governor.

Richardson's Experience. (none / 0)

You probably need to put some time on the job numbers to the list to make it comparable.

Re: Richardson's Experience. (3.00 / 2)

14 Years in Congress
1 Year Ambassador to the UN
3 Years as Energy Secretary
6 Years as Governor of New Mexico

That makes 24 years of elected/appointed high-level "experience."

Re: Ranking Candidates by Experience (3.00 / 1)

Richardson

US House, 1982-96
1997-98   Ambassador to UN
1998-2001 Secretary Of Energy
2001-02   taught, Kennedy School of Government
2002      Elected Governor of New Mexico

Biden

New Castle County Council (DE)  1970-72
US Senate                       1972-

34 years in the Senate

FWIW, Richardson lost his first race for the House (1978).  Obama also lost for the House as did Bill Clinton.

Experience is not all.  One of the best resumes for a President was held by George H.W. Bush who turned out to be a major flop.

Bush Jr had a bad resume. (none / 0)

" One of the best resumes for a President was held by George H.W. Bush who turned out to be a major flop."

Actually Bush Jr's thin resume matches his poor performance.

Re: Bush Jr had a bad resume. (none / 0)

He wrote "G.H.W Bush," that's 41, not 43.

In which case a thick resume leads to a poor presidency though Bush Sr as CIA head and not in the loop Reagan VP is actually a thin resume.
